MADISON, Wis. (Apr. 7, 2023) - Following an opening round loss to Grinnell College, the North Central College women's tennis team swept the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the Midwest Invitational at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
In the Cardinals' first match of the day, Abigail Penados and Natalie Bassett cruised to a doubles win against the No. 6 regionally-ranked duo of Sabrina Tang and Ioanna Giannakou, 8-2. The Pioneers won the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 advantage into singles play.
Grinnell claimed wins at No. 1, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 to clinch the victory and advance to the next round of the Midwest Invitational. Kensington Payne went the distance with a three-set 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory in the No. 3 position. Bassett picked up a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 2.
Taking on UW-Stevens Point in the nightcap, the Cardinals used wins from Penados/Bassett, Payne/Anastasia Bozovic, and Nina Patience/Mikayla Edquiban to take a 3-0 lead into singles action.
Needing just two wins to lock up the victory, Bassett rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles before Patience earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory to clinch the win for North Central. Payne, Penados, Kayla McSweeney, and Edquiban all won in straight sets as well to secure the 9-0 sweep.
The Cardinals take on their second WIAC school of the tournament tomorrow in UW-Whitewater in a battle for fifth place. That match will begin at 12 p.m. at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
