ROCK ISLAND. Ill. (Apr. 14, 2023) - In their most competitive conference match of the season, the North Central College men's tennis team lost to Augustana College 5-4 in a match that came down to the final singles match.

Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez captured the day's first win as the No. 1 doubles duo won 8-3. The Vikings won No. 3 doubles before Colten Way and Javier Suarez Balsera gave the Cardinals a 2-1 edge with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.

Augustana took care of business in the No. 4, 5, and 6 fixtures as North Central would need to win the first three singles positions to claim their 17th straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory. Daniel Estanislao won a tightly contested match with Quentin Essayie at No. 3 in a 6-4, 7-5 win. At No. 2 singles, Matt Sengphommachanh battled to earn a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win to even the contest at 4-4 with just No. 1 singles remaining. Suarez Balsera forced the match to three sets but ultimately fell to Arthur Hermange as the Vikings won, 5-4.

The Cardinals close out the regular season on Tuesday afternoon as they take on Elmhurst University. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. at Brune Tennis Courts.
