WHEATON, Ill. (Apr. 28, 2023) - Taking on the #5 seed Wheaton College in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament, the top-seeded North Central College men's tennis team used a 2-1 doubles advantage before finishing off the Thunder in singles play for a 5-2 victory in the semifinals.

Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez earned the first point of the match in an 8-1 win in the No. 1 spot. After falling at No. 2, the tandem of Matthew Sengphommachanh and Daniel Estanislao battled to an 8-6 win at No. 3 to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. 

Colten Way secured the first win in singles play at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Javier Suarez Balsera made quick work of his opponent in a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2. The Thunder won at No. 5, but Vilarroig Martinez clinched the Cardinals victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win at the No. 1 fixture to give North Central a 5-2 win.

The Cardinals advance to the CCIW Tournament Championship for the third straight season. They will take on the winner of the other semifinal matchup between #2 Carthage and #3 Millikin. The championship match is set for 1 p.m. at Wheaton's tennis courts.
