Amanda Martinez of the North Central College women's wrestling program competed for the Cardinal Wrestling Club in the 2023 Senior World Team Trials this past weekend.
Competing as the No. 4 seed at 55kg, Martinez opened her tournament with a 12-2 tech fall over No. 5 Gallegos. In the semifinals, she lost to the No. 1 seed Jacarra Winchester via fall (3:34) to move into the consolation bracket. Martinez earned a 7-2 decision over No. 6 Gabby Skidmore before upsetting the No. 2 seed Lauren Mason by a 10-4 decision to advance to Final X on June 10th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. There, she will wrestle Alex Hendrick, who took second place at the US Open, in a true third place match to determine who will be on Team USA.
After Gallegos lost to Martinez, she ended her tournament with a 13-4 loss via decision to Mason in the consolation semifinals.Â
Makoyed earned a round of 16 bye as the No. 2 seed in the 76kg division. In the quarterfinals. She made quick work of No. 7 Ashley Lekas with a pin in just 59 seconds. Makoyed lost to No. 3 Dymond Guilford in a tightly contested 9-6 decision. Moving to the consolation semifinals, Makoyed returned to the win column with a 10-0 tech fall over No. 8 Skylar Grote. In a battle for third place, Kylie Welker earned a 12-2 tech fall over Makoyed.
