GRAND RAPIDS, MI. (Sept. 13, 2023) – Traveling to face No. 21-ranked Calvin University, the North Central College women's soccer team looked to continue their non-conference dominance but, a late goal surge fell short leaving the score 5-3.
A battle for offensive possession ensued until Calvin won out with a drive that resulted in a goal from Mia Judd put the Knights ahead, 1-0 with 38 minutes left in the half.
Calvin kept the pressure on peppering the North Central defense with five shots within five minutes culminating with Jordan Boyd's first save of the game. The Cardinals retaliated with shots from Madison DeVriendt and Kaitlyn Cannon forcing dual saves out of Kalex Dodge.
A corner kick by the Knights resulted in the second score of the game on a shot from Mikaela Waroway in the 23rd minute.
The teams traded shots going into the final 15 minutes of the first half. In the 31st minute Maggie Smith's shot found the net to take the score to 3-0.
A string of two corner kicks from the hosts in Smith's second goal of the game in the 51st minute. Just four minutes later the Knights relentless offensive pressure resulted in their final goal of the game from Waroway to extend the lead to 5-0.
In the 68th minute Elle Sutter opened the Cardinals' scoring with a shot past the goalie, assisted by Madison DeVriendt.
Just four minutes later, Kassandra Salviola tallied her first goal of the year with a relay from Gabriella Galvez to reduce the Cardinals' deficit to 5-2.
The Knights' defense sealed up the gaps allowing only one more shot on goal from DeVriendt. In total North Central put up 24 shots forcing 10 saves out of Dodge.
The Cardinals return home to begin a five-game homestand against Kalamazoo College. The match is set for Sept. 16th at 6 p.m. in Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
