Sept. 16, 2023 – The North Central College women's soccer team opened their first matchup of the homestand Saturday at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, facing off against Kalamazoo University putting the game out of reach early in a 7-1 rout.

Beginning the first half, North Central wasted little time etching their first mark on the scoreboard twelve minutes in, Jordan Lange connected with Yazmin Martinez putting the Cardinals on the board 1-0.

The Cardinals found more room to score as just ten minutes later, Elle Sutter drove one past the defense with help from Sarah Andrey to force the score 2-0.

Kalamazoo was not out yet, when a series of back-to-back shots forced two diving saves out of Jordan Boyd, making enough room for Cassidy Short to squeeze a shot past Boyd to inch the score 2-1.

Just seven minutes later North Central got the chance to retaliate with a high-pressure goal of their own, when a shot from Lange setup by Kassandra Salviola connected edged the Cardinals comfortably ahead, 3-1 into halftime.

Entering the second half the Cardinals found another hole in the defense four minutes into the second half, when Sutter connected her second goal of the game with assistance from Andrey and Kaitlyn Cannon.

With the Hornets firmly on the back foot, a costly penalty gave Katie Huey a shot past a diving Elana Mitchell for the Cardinals' fifth goal of the game.

North Central would not ease off the pressure, keeping the ball down field to fire off multiple shots, creating room for a goal from Andrey with assistance from Martinez and Huey in the 63rd minute.

The Cardinals having a comfortable 6-1 lead, Kalamazoo looked to get things moving again but, North Central would dash those hopes in the 76th minute with another goal from Huey, icing the game's final score to 7-1.

The Cardinals continue their five-game homestand against Transylvania University while celebrating the 2023 senior class. Kickoff is set for Sunday Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. in Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
