North Chicago, Ill. (Sept. 2, 2023) – The North Central College men's cross country team split up on the first weekend of the season, posting two impressive performances to start the season. The Cardinals won the John Kurt Invitational at Wartburg College while placing fourth in the Vic Godfrey Open hosted by the University Wisconsin-Parkside.
The first Cardinal crossing the line in the 6,000-meter Vic Godfrey Open was Jacob Everix in a time of 19:38.92, finishing in 19th overall. Following in 22nd place was Ishaan Patel in a time of 19:52.95 f. Other scoring finishers for the Cardinals were Aidan Armstrong in 24th (19:53.00), Nolan Cooks in 27th 19:55.84 and Kal Hoppe in 29th (19:59.80).
Xavier University won the meet with a score of 36, followed by Wisconsin-Parkside with 41, Butler University with 45, and North Central with 113.
The No. 1-ranked Cardinals took the top four finishes in a 5,000-meter race at Wartburg. Max Svienty was the meet's individual champion in a time of 15:17.4. In his first race with the Cardinals, BJ Sorg placed second overall in a time of 15:23.2Nathan Halbrader finished third (15:31.3) and Drew Guimond finished fourth (15:35.7), while Gage Nielsen placed seventh (15:39.1) to round out the Cardinals' scoring.
North Central won the meet with 17 points, while Wartburg scored 42 and Clarke University (Iowa) totaled 102.
North Central returns to action next weekend as they host the NCCXC Invitational at St. James Farm in Warrenville.
