Cardinals Stay Perfect Against Top-Ranked Opponents

ADRIAN, Mich. (Nov. 9, 2024) - The North Central College women's wrestling team took the mat against four ranked teams at the Adrian College Duals. The Cardinals defeated each team with ease, including No. 1 King University, 26-17.
 
The Cardinals began their day against eighth-ranked Sacred Heart University. In the 103-pound weight class, Brianne Graves defeated Ahsia Torres with a 10-2 decision. Leeana Mercado (110) followed in suit, taking down Lauren Nguyen by a decision (8-2). In the 117-pound class, Mikayla Garcia dominated Tatiana Walker with a 9-0 decision. Janessa George followed in the 124 class, taking down Valeria Turgeon with a technical fall (10-0).
 
In the 131 class, Eliana White-Vega only needed one minute and seven seconds to pin Elleahna Anderson. Emma Grimm (138) defeated Madison Canales with a technical fall (11-0) before Sydney Perry defeated Tayla Tildsley with a technical fall (10-0). The 160-pound weight class featured two top-ten opponents, No. 9 Tiera Jimerson and No. 3 Love Daley. Jimerson was able to control the match, winning with a 18-7 technical fall. In the 180 class, Brittyn Corbishley only needed one minute and 46 seconds to pin Madison Sandquist. The dual finished with Caroline Ward (207) falling to Madeline Hodges by a pin. Second-ranked North Central won over No. 8 Sacred Heart in a 35-8 finish.
 
North Central faced fourth-ranked McKendree University in their second dual of the day. In a nail-biting finish in the 103 class, No. 3 Maddie Avila fell to Grabriele Tedesco by a 6-5 decision. No. 6 Kendra Ryan picked up momentum, pinning No. 4 Samantha Miller (3:58). Second-ranked Sydney Petzinger won by a 11-0 technical fall in the 117-pound weight class. Top-ranked Amani Jones edged out fourth-ranked Shelby Moore in a 6-5 decision. Sara Sterner (131) pinned Alexandra Szkotnicki in two minutes and 20 seconds.
 
The 138 class featured another big match-up for both teams, with No. 10 Taylor Graveman and No. 3 Viktorya Torres meeting on the mat. Graveman defeated Torres by a decision (7-4). Bella Mir showed her dominance in the 145 class by pinning Savannah Gomez in three minutes. The Cardinals would drop the 160-pound match as Ruby Rios pinned Elizabeth Raleigh. Corbishley earned her second win of the day with a technical fall over Caroline Gilstrap (12-0) before Ward won her match against Archer Jones (TF 10-0). The Cardinals defeated the Bearcats 34-10.
 
In their third dual of the day, the Cardinals faced eleventh-ranked Schreiner University. Graves (103) opened the dual with a 9-6 decision over Odelia Lopez. Mercado needed one minute and 52 seconds to pin Alyssa Escareno. In the 117-pound weight, Aroma Marrufo earned her first win of the day with a 8-4 decision over Ileah Brown. George (124) defeated Lexy Basurto with a decision (6-2) followed by White-Vega (131) taking down Jania Dunigan with a technical fall (12-0). In the 138-pound weight class, Graveman needed just 40 seconds to pin Brooke Wieczorek. Riley Aamold (145) defeated Azana King with a 12-2 technical fall before Raleigh (160) recorded the Cardinals fastest pin of the day over Jadine Mata in 31 seconds. In the 180 class, Shenita Lawson defeated Scarlett Snodgrass with a 12-2 technical fall. Ward finished off the dual pinning Natalie Espinoza in 33 seconds. North Central took down Schreiner 41-5.
 
North Central's final dual was against their toughest opponent of the day, No. 1 King University. Avila (103) took down Mia Zuniga with a 10-3 decision, before Ryan (110) fell to No. 3 Samara Chavez by a decision. Petzinger (117) edged out Clare Booe with a 12-8 decision before Jones (124) dominated third-ranked Montana Delwader with a 10-0 technical fall. In the 131 class, Sterner pinned Anna Dicugno in three minutes and 33 seconds. The Cardinals fell in the 138-, 145-, and 160-pound weight classes before Corbishley (180) won her match by a forfeit. Second-ranked Traeh Haynes finished off the day by pinning Isabella Calle in two minutes flat. North Central defeated the top-ranked Kings 26-17.
 
The Cardinals will recover and prepare for competition tomorrow as they compete in the Adrian College Invite at 8 a.m. in Adrian, Mich.
