CHICAGO, (Dec. 19, 2024)- The North Central College men's wrestling team traveled to the Ratner Athletics Center for a pair of duals between the University of Olivet and the host, the University of Chicago. North Central split the duals, defeating Olivet, 20-18, and falling to the University of Chicago, 22-20. The Cardinals move to 6-1 in duals on the season after dropping their first dual in nearly a year.
The Cardinals started the day off against the University of Olivet, where the duals started off with a loss in the 125-pound weight class. Benyamin Kamali defeated Davion Johnson by a 19-4 technical fall. Julian Valtierrez put North Central back on track with a victory in the 133-pound weight class. Valtierrez earned a 15-6 major decision over Robert Davids.
In the 141-pound weight class, Bradley Rosen and Dylan Phelps went to sudden victory. Rosen earned the sudden victory, 7-5. The Cardinals fell in the 149-pound weight class after Tyler Herrema scored a 13-4 major decision over Kayle Bearson. With the loss, Bearson falls to 5-4 on the season. Olivet got back-to-back wins as Ramiro Guerrero earned a 10-5 decision win over Luke Christie in the 157-pound class. Christie falls to .500 on the season with a record of 7-7.
Alex Villar inched toward a 10-win season as he faced Juwan Vines in the 165-pound weight class. Villar scored a 10-2 major decision for his ninth win of the season with just two losses. Jay Shuall and PT Schoolman had a very close match in the 174-pound weight class. Ultimately, Shuall would get the advantage, winning by a 13-11 decision. North Central got back on the board with a Payton Geigner victory in the 184-pound bout. Geigner defeated Jack Ward by a 10-2 major decision.
North Central would drop another close bout in the 197-pound class as Kody Krupp and Elijah Brockie battled. Krupp beat Brockie by decision (10-8). Brockie now sits at 10-7 on the season. The final battle of the dual between Olivet and North Central was Robby Bates and Boe Eckman in the 285-pound bout. Bates earned a clean 15-0 technical fall over Eckman to improve to help seal the win for the Cardinals.
North Central battled the University of Chicago next, where they would go 5-5 on matches in the dual.
Starting off with the 125-pound weight class, Johnson fell a second time. This time to Matteo Littman, who defeated Johnson in an 8-3 decision. Johnson is now 2-7 on the season. Valtierrez wrestled again in the afternoon in the 133-pound weight class. Valtierrez earned a tech fall (16-1) over Zack Parisi. Valtierrez is a perfect 4-0 on the season.
Rosen continued the tech fall victory streak for the Cardinals, getting one of his own in the 141-pound class. Rosen defeated Sean Conway by a 20-5 tech fall. Rosen moved to 7-1 this season with a pair of victories on the day. Tyler Starr got action in the 149-pound bout, where it would go to sudden victory with Brendan Connolly. Starr earned the sudden victory (12-10) as he earned his 10th win of the year.
North Central split the next two matches, falling in the 157-pound weight class but winning the 165-pound bout. Darian Estevez took down Nolan Flores, defeating him via major decision (16-2). Flores is 8-5 in the season. Armando Murillo got a decision (6-2) over Nick Cheshier to advance to 3-3 on the season.
Schoolman looked to bounce back from his loss in the first dual, but Tyler Joseph would get the best of him, winning by a 10-4 decision in the 174-pound weight class. Schoolman's record dips to 8-7. Geigner earned a pair of victories in the 184-pound duals today after he beat Cade Creighton with a major decision (13-3). Geigner sports a 13-2 record heading into the break.
North Central would fall in the final two matches of the night to lose their first dual of the season. The 197-pound match saw Gunnar Garriques pinned Jon Kratz in one minute and four seconds. Kratz is now 9-4. The 285-pound match gave the University of Chicago the dual win after Michael D'Orazio pinned Bates in two minutes and one second. Bates is now 12-2 on the season with a win and a loss in the dual meets.
North Central will take a break before returning to action for the NWCA National Duals, held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They are set to wrestle Jan. 10 and Jan. 11. Click
