Cardinals Defeated by No. 10 UChicago, 7-2

CHICAGO (Feb. 2, 2024) - Taking on the first of many ranked opponents for the rest of their 2024 schedule has to offer, the North Central College men's tennis team earned tiebreaker wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles before succumbing to a 7-2 loss to the No. 10 ranked University of Chicago on Friday night at XS Tennis.

Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Matthew Sengphommachanh battled to an 8-7 (7-0) win over John Walentowicz and Derek Hsieh, who is part of the No. 18 ranked doubles team in the country. Wyatt Crowell and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez captured a hard-fought 8-7 (7-5) win at No. 1 doubles with a win over Pat Otero and Andrei Leonov, the other half of the No. 18 ranked tandem in Division III. The Maroons won at No. 3 doubles as the Cardinals held a slight 2-1 edge entering singles play.

UChicago held their own in singles action by sweeping North Central in straight sets. Vilarroig Martinez battled Emil Grantcharov who is ranked No. 7 in the nation, but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-3.

North Central continues its busy weekend tomorrow by hosting Kalamazoo College at 3 p.m. before taking on the Illinois Institute of Technology at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at Naperville Tennis Club.
