ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Mar. 2, 2024) - Posting their first blemish of the season, the North Central College women's tennis team fell to No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis, 8-1 on Saturday afternoon at Tao Tennis Center.
The Bears won the first match of the day with an 8-3 win at No. 3 before Kensington Payne and Anastasia Bozovic gave the No. 10 ranked tandem in the region a battle, but ultimately fell 8-6 at No. 2. Abigail Penados and Natalie Bassett (No. 25 duo in Division III and No. 7 in the region) claimed the lone Cardinal victory of the day with an big 8-4 win over Eliana Hanna and Amber Edmonds, the No. 21 ranked doubles team in the nation and No. 6 in the region.
In singles play, Bassett fell in a tight opening set before controlling the second set with a 6-2 win to push the match to a super set where she fell 10-6. WashU cruised through the rest of the Cardinals lineup winning in straight sets.
North Central heads to Florida for spring break with two matchups on Sunday, Mar. 10. The Cardinals face Transylvania University at 11 a.m. (ET) before taking on No. 33 Christopher Newport University at 4 p.m. (ET). Both matches will be played in Orlando, Fla. at Sanlando Park.
