Apr. 12, 2024Â -Â Getting contributions from several sources throughout a pair of dominant victories, the North Central College softball team encountered little resistance Friday as it swept a double header with Mount Mary University (Wisconsin), 8-0 and 15-0, at Shanower Family Field.
The Cardinals (18-4) jumped in front in the second inning of the opener, scoring on a double by Lauren Bowmar before Kayla Crabtree launched a two-run home run to left-center field. Talia Torosian added an RBI single in the third before another three-run inning in the fifth as Rachael Madsen and Bowmar delivered run-scoring base hits and Crabtree grounded out to bring home another. Torosian tacked on the game's final run with a double in the sixth.
Bowmar and Katie Del Re each went 2 for 2 in the day's first game, while Torosian and Madsen went 2 for 3. Juliana Maude pitched the first four innings and was credited with the win (8-1), allowing just one hit while striking out five. Sam Schilf struck out four batters in two innings of relief.
The Blue Angels (4-19) had no answer for the North Central offense in the nightcap as the hosts scored at least three runs in each inning at bat. Torosian opened the scoring in the first with a sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI double by Madsen and a run-scoring single by Caroline Dooley.Â
Torosian struck again with a two-run single in the second before a sacrifice fly by Madsen and another RBI double by Bowmar. Torosian drove in another run with a fielder's choice in the third, with Del Re scoring on an error on the same play, with Hailey Morsovillo following with a two-run single and Bowmar coming through again driving in a run with a base hit. Emalee-Ann Potocki's single produced a run in the fourth before Torosian again closed the scoring with a two-run double.
The Cardinals' scoring total was their highest in a game since a 15-7 victory over Elmhurst University on Apr. 11, 2021. Carley Creeth was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with three runs scored in the second game, while Del Re was 2 for 2 with four runs and Torosian, Morsovillo, Madsen and Charlotte Toosley each went 2 for 3. Torosian drove in a career-high six runs and Morsovillo also crossed the plate three times.
Dooley pitched all five innings to get the win (2-0), allowing two hits and one walk while striking out four.Â
The Cardinals return to competition Tuesday, traveling to face Carthage College in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play. The first game at Wiers Family Stadium is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. Click HERE for the full 2024 schedule and live coverage options.Â
