Men’s Tennis Downed by WashU in NCAA Tournament

CHICAGO (May 10, 2024) - The North Central College men's tennis team concluded its season with a 5-1 loss to No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday evening at XS Tennis.

After the Bears won 8-5 in the No. 3 doubles position, Wyatt Crowell and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez took down the No. 8 doubles team in the nation 8-7 (7-3) to give the Cardinals their first points of the day. WashU won 8-5 at No. 2 to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.

Collin Scruggs of WashU claimed the first singles victory over Matthew Sengphommachanh 6-3, 6-0 before Gaurav Singh beat Justin Penados 6-2, 6-0. To clinch the match, No. 23 Jared Phillips defeated Ramon Vilarroig Martinez 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot.

North Central finished the season 23-4, winning 16 matches in a row prior to this loss. The Cardinals went 7-0 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin regular season before winning the CCIW Tournament to earn their spot in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history.

Vilarroig Martinez has earned his spot in the NCAA Division III Individual Tournament, beginning on Sun., May 26 on the campus of WashU. He played in the event last year as well, falling in the opening round.
