ANGOLA, IN. (Sept. 6, 2024) – The North Central College men's soccer team earned their first win of the 2024 season, with a late offensive surge to shut down the Trine University Thunder 2-0.

North Central (1-1-1) comes off a narrow 1-1 tie with Gustavus Adolphus College on Sunday. Looking to get the offense rolling, the Cardinals were the first to shoot just two minutes in as Luis Aviles had one snatched up by Dillon Lambert at goal for Trine University (1-2).

The Thunder came right back finding an offensive possession in the 9th minute as Trevor Share in net for the Cardinals scooped up a shot from Dalton Douglas. North Central began to lock down, blocking another attempt five minutes later.

As the defense found its stride, the Cardinal offense ramped up the pressure putting a collective five shots over the next thirty minutes with Ghettryam Nikiema firing one off having to be saved by Lambert in the 41st minute. The defense managed to lock out the Thunder to two shots over the same time period to keep the game scoreless into halftime.

Opening the second half, the Cardinals fired ahead just thirty-eight seconds in as Jared Urueta netted his first goal of the season for a quick 1-0 lead. Trine attempted to retaliate but only put out another two shots to North Central's five with none being on target. In the 64th minute, Will Mayer broke away for his first goal of the year to put the Cardinals comfortably ahead 2-0.

The next twenty-six minutes saw North Central and Trine continue to battle for possession as both teams winded down the clock. The Thunder obtained one more scoring attempt in the final three minutes that Share bottled up for the team's first shutout win of the year.

In total, the Cardinals shot seventeen times with six on target while the Thunder were allowed nine shots with three on target. At goal, Share locked down all ninety minutes of action saving three shots to Lambert's four.
