ST. LOUIS, MO. (Sept. 6, 2024) – The North Central College women's soccer team faltered to the #2 nationally ranked, Washington University Bears after a second-half surge for a 5-1 final score.
Washington University (3-0) was the first to shoot as Grace Ehlert broke free for a shot off target just twenty-seven seconds in. Two minutes later Sara Giannotti made a pass to Ally Hacket for the Bears' first goal of the game.
The Cardinals came roaring back five minutes later, as
Gabriella Mattio connected with
Victoria Jaimes for her first career goal to tie the score at 1-1. Over the next thirty minutes,
Jordan Boyd kept the Cardinal hopes alive fending off three scoring attempts as the team struggled to get an offensive possession.
With seven minutes left in the half, Washington found room past Boyd with a shot from Olivia Clemons to inch the score ahead 2-1 into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, North Central finally found an offensive possession, putting up two shots on target from
Sarah Andrey within three minutes. Both teams continued to battle up and down the field for the next twenty-two minutes until a shot from Clemons got past Boyd to up the score 3-1.
With
Olivia Mattison checked in at goal, the Cardinals did not get another shot on goal for the duration of the match as Hacket and Clemons each scored a goal to seal the score at 5-1.
In total, North Central was outshot only shooting on target four times to Washington's eleven. On defense Boyd and Mattison combined for six saves to keep the Cardinal's hope alive.
