MEQUON, Wis. (Nov. 22, 2025)- Competing in their second tournament of the season, the North Central College men's wrestling team traveled to Mequon, Wis., for the 31st Annual Concordia University of Wisconsin Open. In the open, the Cardinals had two wrestlers win their respective weight classes as top-ranked
Chip Guzman won the 125-pound division and seventh-ranked
Joshua Robison won the 141-pound division.
The open featured some of the top-ranked schools in the country, including No. 2 Wartburg College, No. 3 The College of New Jersey, No. 6 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, No. 7 University of Chicago, and No. 8 North Central. Eight Cardinals placed in the top six in the open, with two winners of their weight class and a top-three finish.
Guzman began the day as the one seed in the 125-pound bracket, where he faced Joseph DeAngelo (TCNJ) and finished with a 14-2 major decision victory. In the second championship round, Guzman forced a 17-1 technical fall in the second period, defeating Alejandro Cordova (Elmhurst University). He followed that up in the quarterfinals with a 16-0 technical fall on Lane Anderson (MSOE). In the semifinal match, Guzman squared off with ninth-ranked Matt Griffin (TCNJ), which ended in a 17-1 technical fall in favor of Guzman in 5:49. Guzman won the championship match in dominant fashion, with a victory over Andrew Punzalan (Wabash) via technical fall (18-2). Overall, Guzman went 5-0 in the tournament, with four wins coming by way of technical fall.
Entering the tournament as a four seed in the 141-pound bracket, Robison started the tournament off facing Gavin Ross (Dubuque) and blanking Ross in a 19-0 technical fall in the third period of the match. Robison followed with a second straight technical fall over Aidan Laird (Wheaton), with the final score at 17-2. Robison advanced to the semifinals after an 8-1 decision over Patrick Mullen (Wartburg). The semifinal match featured Robison against No. 2-ranked 141-pound wrestler Sean Conway (U-Chicago). With seconds to go and Robison trailing 5-4, he scored a last-second takedown with two seconds remaining to finish a 7-4 decision upset over Conway to move to the championship match. In the championship match, Robison won via medical forfeit of Vincent Santaniello (TCNJ).
Ethan Spacht placed third in the 133-pound division as the three seed. Spacht began his day with back-to-back pinfalls, pinning Toby Laird (Wheaton) in just 23 seconds and Michael Pins (Wartburg) in one minute and 25 seconds. In the quarterfinal match, Spacht won via a 10-1 major decision over Jackson Rustad (U-Chicago). In a battle of top-ranked 133-pound wrestlers, the semifinals featured Spacht taking on third-ranked Garrett Totten (TCNJ). Ultimately Spacht fell to a 5-3 decision. Wrestling for a chance to place top three in his weight class, Spacht battled back in the consolation bracket with a 15-0 technical fall over Luke Reitter (TCNJ) and defeated Rustad for a second time in the tournament in an 8-0 major decision to take third place.
Taking fourth place for North Central in their respective weight classes were AJ Frescura at 197 pounds and Luke Chrisse in the 285-pound bracket.
Frescura put himself in the quarterfinals with a 9-4 decision win over Owen Hansen (UW-Stevens Point) and an 8-5 sudden victory against Alex Watson (Loras). He fell to third-ranked 197-pound wrestler Gunnar Garriques (U-Chicago) by getting pinned. Bouncing back to the third-place match, Frescura won his consolation matches, one by a 14-6 major decision over Spencer Watson (Wabash) and one by medical forfeit over North Central teammate Casey Aikman. Frescura fell in the third-place match to 11th-ranked Cal Dorota (Wartburg) by an 8-5 decision.
Chrisse battled to the semifinal match with a first-round major decision victory over Acott Smith (Adrian College), followed by back-to-back technical falls in the second round over Isaak Smith (UW-Whitewater) and Mike Milovich (Elmhurst) in the quarterfinal match. Chrisse faced his first setback, dropping the match to eighth-ranked Justin Maton (Dubuque) by pinfall. Chrisse bounced back in the next match with a pinfall in 25 seconds on ninth-ranked Matthew Coon (TCNJ). The third-place match didn't go Chrisse's way, as he fell by a major decision to Jordan Lewis (UW-Whitewater).
The Cardinals had three wrestlers place sixth in their respective weight classes, including Kayle Bearson, Henry Rydwelski, and Aikman. Bearson went 3-3 in the open, competing in the 141-pound division; he ultimately lost by medical forfeit in the fifth-place match. Rydwelski, wrestling at 184 pounds, fell to RJ Samuels (UW-Whitewater) in the fifth-place match by a 4-1 decision with a takedown at the buzzer. Aikman's tournament finished in the fifth-place match by medical forfeit, earning him sixth place.
North Central hosts Augustana College on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. inside of Gregory Arena for the first home dual meet of the season.
