CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 14, 2025) - After a tight 4-3 victory in game one over Saint Joseph's College of Maine, North Central College softball pitcher
Sam Schilf delivered a complete game shutout to secure a 1-0 win for the Cardinals in their final day of THE Spring Games.
The Monks scored right away in the top of the first thanks to two singles and a stolen base. North Central answered in the bottom half of the first as Rachel Madsen walked and moved to second base on a wild pitch. An RBI single from Hailey Morsovillo evened the game at 1-1.
In the third, Saint Joseph's took advantage of three Cardinal errors to tack on two runs and take a 3-1 lead after the top of the third. Again North Central responded offensively as a bases-loaded hit by pitch from Lauren Bowmar played Talia Torosian to bring the Cardinals within one, 3-2.
Grace Vlach walked and stole second base with two outs in the fourth inning. She scored on a wild pitch before Torosian drove in Madsen on an RBI single to give North Central a 4-3 lead.
Juliana Maude took control in the circle for the Cardinals and did not allow a Monk past second base for the rest of the outing to clinch a 4-3 win for North Central. She earned her fourth win of the season, striking out eight in four innings of work. Madsen scored twice while Torosian and Morsovillo recorded RBIs.
The strong pitching from the Cardinals rolled over into game two as starter Sam Schilf posted a 1-2-3 inning in the first. In the top of the fourth, Lynch drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Torosian. An RBI single from Madsen put North Central on top, 1-0.
Schilf remained in charge, holding the Pride scoreless the rest of the way to secure the first complete game shutout of the season for North Central. In total, Schilf struck out three and did not issue a walk in her seven innings of work. Madsen drove in the game's lone run as Lynch scored on the RBI single.
North Central returns to Illinois with an 8-6 record from the trip. The Cardinals host Trinity Christian in their home opener Saturday, Mar. 22 with game one beginning at noon at Shanower Family Field.
