PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Mar. 15, 2025)- At the end of day two of the NCAA Division III National Championship, the North Central College men's wrestling team placed sixth, scoring 60 points. The Cardinals walked away with four All-Americans, including
Christian Guzman, who finished as the national runner-up for a second season in a row at 125 pounds.
Guzman began day two with a semifinal matchup against No. 3 seeded Zach Beckner (Ferrum), who at the time was 22-0 overall. Guzman defeated Becker by a 13-4 major decision to set up Guzman versus top-seeded Joziah Fry for a third time at nationals. Despite scoring first in the match with a takedown on Fry, Guzman failed to get the better of him in their third matchup, losing by a 10-5 decision, the closest of their three bouts. Guzman finished the 2024-25 season with a 35-1 record and is now a three-time All-American, three-time national qualifier, and two-time national runner-up.Â
Bradley Rosen battled all the way back from a round one loss in the national championship to rattling off six straight wins to become an All-American and finish third in the 141-pound bracket, his highest finish at a national championship. The two-time All-American began day two with a 14-1 major decision over Tommy Thongseng (Wartburg) to advance to the consolation semifinals for a rematch with No. 1 seeded Josh Wilson (Greensboro), the wrestler who knocked Rosen to the consolation bracket. There, Rosen defeated Wilson in a 9-3 decision to move on to the third place match. Rosen ended his season with a 22-12 major decision victory over fourth-seeded Ty Bisek (Concordia-Moorehead). Rosen finishes his collegiate career as a two-time All-American, three-time national qualifier, and three-time College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Champion.Â
Placing eighth in the 174-pound bracket and becoming an All-American, Javen Estrada dropped the final two matches of his season. After a strong finish to day one, Estrada could not keep the momentum going as he dropped the consolation quarterfinal match to No. 5 seeded LJ Richardson (Coe College) in a 15-4 major decision. The seventh place match ended in a 17-1 technical fall as second seeded Zeb Gnida (Loras) had Estrada's number. Estrada finishes his collegiate career as a two-time All-American, three-time national qualifier, and one-time CCIW Champion.Â
Robby Bates became an All-American and placed eighth in the 285-pound bracket after falling in his final two matches at the national championship. Bates started off the day in the consolation quarterfinal match against Adolfo Betancur (JWU). Despite the low-scoring match, Bates could not get any offense in and fell to Betancur by a 4-0 decision to move him to the seventh place match. Bates' matchup in the seventh place match was the No. 6 seeded Mauro Pellot (Alvernia), where he would lose a tightly contested 7-5 decision. Bates finishes his collegiate career as a three-time All-American, three-time national qualifier, and four-time CCIW Champion.
For the first time in Division III history, there were co-champions at the NCAA National Championship as Johnson and Wales University and Wartburg College tied for first place, scoring 83.5 points each. Augsburg University shared the podium with them, coming in third with 74 points. Baldwin Wallace University got fourth place with 69 points, and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse rounded out the top five, scoring 65 points.Â
North Central finished the season 11-3 in dual meets while extending their CCIW dual win streak to 57 and took home their third straight CCIW title. The Cardinals then won the program's first regional championship and sent six wrestlers to nationals, where they placed sixth.
