Cardinals Lead After Day One, 13 Wrestler Advance

CORALVILLE, ILL. (Mar. 7, 2025) - After a long, hard battle in Xtream Arena, the North Central College women's wrestling team finds themselves ahead of the 55 teams competing in the NCWWC National Championships. The Cardinals have 13 wrestlers moving onto day two, while seven are in the semifinals. 
 
North Central put up 111 points with the University of Iowa trailing the Cardinals with 107.5 points. In third place sits McKendree University (103), followed by Grand Valley State University (81.5) and Presbyterian College (65.5).

Maddie Avila delivered the Cardinals their first wins of the championship with an 11-0 technical fall over Alexis Winecke of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the 103-pound weight class. In the second round, Avila fell to No. 8 Avery Kibelbek (King University) in a heartbreaking 5-4 decision. Persevering in the consolation bracket, Avila defeated Jesenia Camargo (Delaware Valley University) with a 10-0 technical fall in round three. Avila finished day one by pinning Gannon University's Jada Badayos-Chaves in two minutes and 46 seconds. Tomorrow, Avila will face No. 6 Jennesis Martinez of Colorado Mesa University to start the day.
 
The ninth-ranked wrestler in the 103 class, Brianne Graves, earned her first career championship win by pinning the University of Mount Olive's Lilian Prendergast (5:54). Graves fell to No. 6 Jennesis Martinez (Colorado Mesa) but pinned Juliana Alejandro (Tiffin University) in her first round of the consolation bracket (4:23). Graves continued to hold her head up high in the third round of the consolation bracket, defeating Presbyterian's Chiara Barbieri with a 10-0 technical fall. Graves will face No. 8 Avery Kibelbek of King in the fourth round tomorrow.
 
In the 110 division, No. 4 Kendra Ryan defeated McKendree's Samantha Miller with a technical fall (10-0) before picking up another technical fall win over Fort Hays State University's Josiah Ortiz (11-0). Ryan defeated Iowa's Emilie Gonzalez in a thrilling 7-5 decision in the quarterfinals. Ryan will face top-ranked Sage Mortimer from Grand Valley State University to begin session three.
 
Second-ranked Sydney Petzinger opened her weekend in the 117 class with a swift 10–0 technical fall over Jenna Beddow (McKendree) in the first round. Then Petzinger pinned York University's Gisele Ramirez in one minute and 41 seconds. Petzinger concluded day one with a 10-0 technical fall win over No. 6 Melanie Mendoza (King University). Petzinger takes on No. 4 Karissa Turnwall of Emmanuel University tomorrow in the semifinals.
 
The Cardinals defending national champion and top-ranked wrestler in the 124 division, Amani Jones, started her day off with two technical fall wins. First, Jones defeated William Jewell College's Emarie Bolosan (13-2) before defeating the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Annesley Day (11-0). Jones dominated her quarterfinal bout, taking down Lorianna Piestewa (Colorado Mesa) with a 10-0 technical fall. In the semifinals, Jones will face-off against No. 5 Aspen Blasko (Grand Valley State).
 
The top-ranked wrestler in the 131 class, Sara Sterner, won her first match of the day by pinning Emmanuel University's Samantha Larios in one minute and 19 seconds. Sterner picked up two 10-0 technical falls in the next two rounds. Sterner defeated Jamie Laswell (Fort Hays State) in the second round before taking down Piper Cadden (Fort Hays State) in the quarterfinals. Sterner will begin day two of the championships by meeting No. 2 Alexandr Szkotnicki of McKendree on the mat in the semifinals.
 
In the 138-pound weight class, both Emma Grimm and Taylor Graveman represented the Cardinals. Grimm was electric on the mat, but with 40 seconds left of the first bout, she suffered a heartbreaking tournament-ending injury.
 
Graveman won her first match by an 8-3 decision before picking up a technical fall over Wartburg College's Aniyah Kelly (10-0). Graveman ended her day on the mat pinning Carina Giangerus (Presbyterian) in the last second of the quarterfinals (5:59). Tomorrow, Graveman will meet Haylie Jaffe (McKendree) in the semifinals.
 
Third-ranked Bella Mir was a pinning machine in the 145 division. Mir pinned Marissa Rumsey (Lock Haven University) in one minute and 34 seconds in the first round. Mir only needed 45 seconds in the second round to pin Augustana's Aine Moffit. Mir will take on her old teammate, Reese Larramendy, in the semifinals tomorrow.
 
Also, in the 145 class was No. 7 Sydney Perry. In her first career NCWWC Championship match, Perry racked up a dominating 10-0 technical fall over West Liberty University's Skyelar Smith. Perry then pinned Erica Schroeder (Colorado Mesa) in one minute and 49 seconds. After a hard-fought battle, Perry fell to top-ranked Macey Kilty from Iowa in the quarterfinals. Perry will begin day two by facing Aine Drury of Aurora University on the mat.
 
In the 160-pound weight class, No. 6 Tiera Jimerson defeated Emmanuel's Kendra Heroch in a nail-biting 3-0 decision but fell to Dubque's Alexandra Hofrichter in the second round. Jimerson continued to compete on the mat in the consolation bracket, picking up two 10-0 technical falls before session two concluded. First, Jimerson took down Quincy University's Sophia Sosa in round two. Then, Jimerson defeated Texas Woman's University's Poorna Bau in the third round. Tomorrow, Jimerson will take on No. 8 Gretchen Donally (Colorado Mesa).
 
Third-ranked Shenita Lawson and No. 4 Brittyn Corbishley competed for the Cardinals in the 180 division. Corbishley started the day off hot, pinning both Sacred Heart's Jacklyn Smith (0:11) and Lock Haven's Azariah Moore (0:21). In the quarterfinals, Corbishley fell to No. 5 Naomi Simon from Iowa. Corbishley will start day two against Jade Herzer of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
 
Lawson started her day by defeating Presbyterian's Kascidy Garren with a 10-0 technical fall in the first round. Then, Lawson pinned Mia Gaetjens from Adrian College in one minute and 32 seconds. Lawson battled it out in the quarterfinals with No. 6 Madison Sandquist (Sacred Heart) for a 7-3 decision win. Tomorrow, in the semifinals, Lawson will face No. 3 Sabrina Nauss (Grand Valley State).
 
In the 207-pound weight class, No. 6 Traeh Haynes and No. 5 Dasia Yearby had a busy day on the mat. Haynes fell in the first round to Presbyterian's Maria Aiono before shutting down Sacred Heart's Madeline Hodge with a 5-0 decision. In round two of the consolation bracket, Haynes pinned the University Sioux Falls' Zoe Adam in only 19 seconds. Haynes met Yearby on the mat in round three. After a hard-fought match-up, Haynes pinned Yearby (5:56). Haynes will meet Julia Richey of Simon Fraser University on the mat tomorrow morning.
 
Yearby started the day off on a high note by pinning Frostburg State's Jocelyn Cacek in only 39 seconds but fell to Esther Peters (Chadron State College) in the second round. In round two of the consolation bracket, Yearby needed just 30 seconds to pin Northern Michigan University's Kailyn Garret. Yearby fell to Haynes in round three to end her stint at her first career NCWWC National Championships. Yearby finished the season with a record of 32-8.
 
The second-ranked Cardinals will return to the mats in Xtream Arena tomorrow, Mar. 8, at 10 a.m. for session three of the Championships.
