Steady Start Marks Women’s Track & Field Season Opener

Jan. 9, 2026 - In its season opener, the North Central College women's track and field team came away with 11 event wins and 13 personal bests by its upperclassmen on Friday night, Jan. 9 as the Cardinals hosted Benedictine University and Lawrence University for the Cardinal Opener.

Cali Minkie clocked a personal best of 7.96 in the 60-meter dash preliminary round to enter finals as the top-seed. She then came back with a 7.99 to win the event while Zara Uvakova (8.23) and Kate Schmidthuber (8.36) finished second and third, respectively. 

Schmidthuber came back to win the 200m dash with a 26.55-second effort from the third heat, followed closely by Minkie in the fourth and final heat, who posted a time of 26.58, her fastest indoor 200 time to date.

Julia Kelly and Charlotte Rossi tied for first in the 60-meter hurdles after posting finishing times of 9.72 seconds. Lucia Sanchez Scriven clocked a personal best of 10.54 to finish third overall. 

Kelly also posted a win in the long jump, with a leap of 17'0.75" on her first attempt that held steady through the rest of the competition. Sanchez Scriven jumped a 4.97m (16'3.75") mark to finish second, followed by Samantha Page in third with a 4.74m (15'6.75") jump.

In the first collegiate race of her career, freshman Dylan Moeller came away with a win in the 800m run, posting a time of 2:27.67 as teammate Segi Smith-Pariola followed in second (2:31.02) and Ciré Smith came in third at 2:31.57.

Lily Anderson opened her junior campaign with a pair of wins in the mile and the 3,000m. Anderson cut two seconds off her personal best time in the mile, clocking a 5:29.97 winning time. She then came back later in the night to win the 3k in a time of 11:24.36. In the mile, Camdyn Lawson came in second with a 5:47.77, followed closely by teammate Yarecci Salmeron in third with a time of 5:48.11. Salmeron and Lawson switched places for the 3k, with Salmeron's 11:41.67 being good for second and Lawson's personal best time of 11:53.42 earning her third place.

Leona Agyemang recorded the first event win of her career in the triple jump, with a 10.70m (35'1.25") jump in the finals. Teammate Elianna Keyes recorded a second-place finish with a 10.30m (33'9.50") mark. 

Yakyra Wilder swept the shot put and weight throw events, earning the first two wins of the freshman's career. Wilder threw an 11.63m (38'2") mark during the preliminary round to take the lead and never looked back. She also produced a 14.57m (47'9.75") throw in the weight throw for the win. Freshman Mackenzie Conklin earned a second-place finish in the shot put with a 10.98m (36'0.25") mark on her final throw of the night. In the weight throw, freshman Aryana Smith turned in a runner-up finish with an 11.70m (38'4.75") throw, followed by Sophia Sarno's personal best toss of 11.67m (38'3.50"), which was good for third. 

Gwen Berenyi opened her senior campaign with a comfortable win in the pole vault. Berenyi's best clearance of the day came on her second attempt at 3.65m (11'11.75") landing her seventh in Division III so far this season. Teammate Lily Wintergerst notched a 3.05m (10'0") jump on her second attempt to take second, and Jillian Beneke finished third with a 2.90m (9'6.25") clearance.

Pola Kubrak notched a 1.50m (4'11") clearance in the women's high jump to take second by way of a tiebreaker with event winner Jacqui Malm of Lawrence. Kendal Franklin made the 1.40m (4'7")  bar on her second attempt to secure third place. 

North Central returns to Al B. Carius Track next Saturday, Jan. 17 for the Pat Heenan Invitational. Events are slated for a 10:30 a.m. start.
