ELMHURST, Ill. (Oct. 3, 2026) – The No. 13 North Central College women's soccer team earned its first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin victory of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Elmhurst University, 2-1. The Cardinals improve to 8-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in CCIW play, while the Bluejays fall to 7-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action.

Elmhurst came out aggressively and struck first in the 16th minute, as Kelli Coughlin scored off a corner kick to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.

North Central answered in the 29th minute when an Elmhurst defender's attempted clearance found the back of the net for an own goal, leveling the match at 1-1. The Cardinals continued to apply pressure before halftime, putting four of their six first-half shots on goal.

After the break, North Central continued to create opportunities. Madison DeVriendt nearly gave the Cardinals the lead in the 51st minute, sending a shot off the woodwork.

Another long cross upfield put DeVriendt in good position in the box but she was unable to time it up, colliding with the keeper and resulting in an Elmhurst goal kick.

Baylee Burbidge also tested the Elmhurst defense, forcing a save in the 68th minute before putting North Central ahead just over three minutes later. In the 71st minute, Kara Waishwell brought the ball up the right flank placing it for Burbidge to fire a shot into the net for her first collegiate goal, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage.

North Central's defense held Elmhurst scoreless the rest of the way, with goalkeeper Emma Megerle making four saves on the afternoon. The Cardinals outshot Elmhurst, 9-6, and put six shots on goal compared to five for the Bluejays. Burbidge led the Cardinals with four shots and three shots on goal, while DeVriendt added two shots.

North Central is set to host Millikin University for a CCIW matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
