Cardinals drop two at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. (Oct. 4, 2008) – The North Central College women's tennis team lost identical 9-0 matches to regional powers, Wheaton College and UW-Whitewater, Saturday afternoon in Wheaton, Ill. The North Central-Wheaton match was originally scheduled for Thursday but was suspended due to darkness after eight of the nine points were played.

Against Wheaton on Thursday, the Cardinals were swept in all nine matches played for the second straight season. The Thunder claimed the 9-0 victory in last season's dual match on September 29 in Wheaton.

In singles, Jordan Hook knocked off Cory Schillerstrom (Fr., Naperville, Ill./Central)  6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 singles. Hook is the defending College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin champion in No.1 singles and was the CCIW Player of the Year last season. The No. 5 singles match between Christine Heyd (Sr., Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) and Jill Casserly was suspended due to darkness and was the lone match completed on Saturday afternoon, with Casserly winning, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.

The Wheaton match was the final conference dual match of the season, with the Cardinals finishing 4-2 within the CCIW while the Thunder end conference play a perfect 6-0.

Against UW-Whitewater, the Cardinals once again fell 9-0, losing all 12 sets in singles action. In No. 1 doubles, Allison Paschold (Jr., Carlock, Ill./Normal West) and Schillerstrom fell, 8-5, to the Warhawk tandem of Kalla Schaefer and Amy Siemon.

The losses drop North Central to 11-4 overall while Wheaton remains unbeaten at 7-0 and UW-Whitewater improves to 6-1. Saturday's action was the final dual matches of the season for the Cardinals who have the week off before heading down to Bloomington, Ill. for the CCIW Tennis Championship, held at the Evergreen Racquet Club on October 10-11. The Cardinals will look to improve on last season's performance at the championships where they finished fourth overall, scoring 27 points.
