Cardinals top Blue Jays in conference home opener

Sep. 16, 2008 -- The North Central College women's tennis team continued their winning ways on Tuesday, defeating College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival Elmhurst College, 7-2, at Ranchview Park in Naperville, Ill. Christine Heyd (Sr., Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) recorded her 16th straight singles victory, improving her record to an unblemished 16-0.

The Cardinals set the tone early, winning two of three doubles matches, with Cory Schillerstrom (Fr., Naperville, Ill./Central) and Allison Paschold (Jr., Carlock, Ill./Normal West) getting the 8-0 win over Emmy Odean and Blair Hufford in No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles, it was Alicia DeGrado (So., Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) and Heyd coming up victorious against Stephanie Ruff and Megan Kallemeyn, winning 8-1.

In singles, Heyd extended her season long winning streak with a, 6-0, 6-1, route of Kallemeyn in No. 5 singles. Schillerstrom cruised to the, 6-1, 6-2, victory in No. 1 singles while DeGrado picked up the win in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1. In No. 3 singles, Paschold downed Ruff, 6-2, 6-1 while Cristina Madrigal (Jr., Hickory Hills, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) needed the tiebreaker to win the match, 6-3, 4-6, 10-2, over Alex Stark.

With the wins, North Central improves to 9-1 on the season and 4-0 in CCIW action while the Blue Jays fall to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the CCIW. The team returns to the court on Friday, September 19, when they travel to Saint Peter, Minn. for the three-day long Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. The Cardinals return home on Tuesday, September 30, when they try and close out the season with a perfect home dual meet record, taking on Calumet College (Ind.).
