KENOSHA, Wis. (Sep. 27, 2008) – Carthage College blanked the North Central College women's tennis team, 9-0, Saturday in Kenosha, handing the Cardinals their first loss within the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
In doubles, Gina Klein and Taylor Gustafson defeated the No. 1 Cardinal team of Cory Schillerstrom (Fr., Naperville, Ill./Central) and Allison Paschold (Jr., Carlock, Ill./Normal West) 8-2. In No. 2 doubles the Lady Reds picked up the 8-5 win over Alicia DeGrado (So., Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) and Christine Heyd (Sr., Elk Grove Village), while in No. 3 doubles, Melissa Lewis (Sr., Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) and Cristina Madrigal (Jr., Hickory Hills, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) fell 8-4.
In No. 5 singles, Heyd took Emily Murphy to a decisive third-set tie-beaker before falling, 7-5, 4-6, 15-13, snapping a 17-match win streak. Heyd is now 17-1 on the season in singles play. Schillerstrom fell 6-2, 6-1, in No. 1 singles while DeGrado fell 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles spot. The Lady Reds won 12 of the 13 sets in singles play.
The loss was just the second of the year as the Cardinals fall to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in conference while the Lady Reds improve to 5-1 overall and remain unbeaten at 4-0 in CCIW action. The team returns to the court on Monday for a non-conference match against Benedictine. The match will be played at the team's home court at Ranchview Park but is officially considered an away match.
