HUNTLEY, Ill. (Jan. 30, 2009)-- Four freshmen made their collegiate debuts as the North Central College men's tennis team opened up its 2009 season Friday night with a 7-2 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering at the indoor courts of the Heathbridge Club.
The Cardinals set the tone from the onset, winning two of the three doubles matches. In No. 1 doubles, Sam Sweeney (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and Matt Boguslawski (Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) picked up the decisive 8-1 victory over Juan Diego Montenegro and Mark Shadler while in No. 2 doubles, Eric McKee (Fr., Naperville, Ill./Saint Francis) and Robert Lodding (So., Niles, Ill./West) cruised to the 8-2 win.
In singles action, North Central won five of the six matches, winning all but the No. 6 singles match. Sweeney and Boguslawaki won by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, while in No. 3 singles, McKee needed a third set to rally for the 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 win. Josh Clay (Fr., Bloomington, Ill./University) rebounded from his doubles loss to pick up a clean sweep of Ohland, 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 singles while Lodding picked up the 6-0, 6-4 victory in the No. 5 position.
North Central returns to the court on Saturday, taking on UW-Whitewater at the Heathbridge Club with matches beginning at noon.
