Men's Tennis suffers first defeat of the season, 7-2

HUNTLEY, Ill. (Jan. 31, 2009)- A day after the North Central College men's tennis team opened its season with a convincing 7-2 win over MSOE, the Cardinals found themselves on the wrong end of the same score; losing 7-2 to regionally-ranked UW-Whitewater at the indoor courts of the Healthbridge Club.

In doubles action, the Warhawks took two of three with the Cardinals lone win at the No. 2 position where Eric McKee (Fr., Naperville, Ill./Saint Francis) and Robert Lodding (So., Niles, Ill./West) improved to 2-0 on the season with a, 9-8 (6), win over Charlie Miller and Tim Moller.

In singles play, Sam Sweeney (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) remained perfect at the top spot, recording a, 6-2, 6-2, win over the Warhawks No. 1 man, Alex Lowe. Lowe had entered the match ranked 11th in the region in No. 1 singles. In No. 2 singles, Matt Boguslawski (Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) took the match to three sets before falling, 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 13-11, to Mike Harmatys.

With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 1-1 on the year while the Warhawks, ranked ninth in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, improve to 1-1 overall, including a 1-0 mark against Division III competition. North Central takes the next two weeks off before heading up to DePere, Wis. for a pair of matches against host-Saint Norbert College and 22nd-ranked UW-La Crosse.
