Women's Tennis falls in Spring Season Opener

After a four-month hiatus, the North Central College women's tennis team returned to the court, losing 9-0 to a seasoned Calvin College (Mich.) squad in the first of the team's three match spring break tour of Florida.

The Knights (4-3), ranked 15th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, entered the match in mid-season form having been playing matches since mid-February. In doubles, the No. 2 squad of Alicia DeGrado and Christine Heyd kept the score close against Calvin's Jill VanVeen and Rachel Strikwerda, but were ultimately outgunned, falling 8-5.

In singles, Heyd put up a close fight in the opening set at the No. 3 position against Elisabeth Geenan, falling 6-4, 6-1. In No. 4 singles, Allison Paschold kept the match close, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Strikwerda while Cory Schillerstrom fell 6-1, 6-0, in No. 1 singles to Melissa Oosterhouse, who entered the match ranked 13th in the Central Region by the ITA.

The Cardinals (11-5 overall, 0-1 in 2009) return to the courts tomorrow when they face Kalamazoo College (Mich.) before wrapping up the trip on Wednesday with a dual against the College of Saint Catherine (Minn.).
