Men's Tennis concludes Florida trip with split

Orlando, Fla. (Mar. 24, 2009)--
The North Central College men's tennis squad wrapped up its Florida trip on Tuesday, falling 8-1 to regionally-ranked Luther College (Iowa) before ending the day on a high note with a 6-3 win over Lawrence University (Wis.) at the Oak Street Tennis Courts.

Against Luther, the Cardinals No. 1 doubles squad of Matt Boguslawski and Sam Sweeney came away with the 8-6 win over Harrison Whiteley and Thomas Orser in what proved to be the team's only match win. In singles, Boguslawski put up a tough fight against Utsab Rija, winning the first set before eventually falling 1-6, 6-2, 10-6.

The No. 1 singles match featured two regionally ranked players as Sam Sweeney, ranked 18th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, fell to 20th ranked Scott Sundstrom 6-1, 6-0. The Norse (19-3) entered the match ranked 12th in the Central Region and was the third ranked team the Cardinals have faced this season.

Against Lawrence (5-6), North Central won two of the three doubles matches while taking four of six singles matches for the 6-3 win to cap off the team's trip. In No. 1 doubles, Boguslawski and Sweeney picked up their second win of the afternoon, defeating Ryan Dunn and Travis Fondow in a tightly contested match that went into the tiebreaker, winning 9-8 (7-1). In No.3 doubles Robert Lodding and Chris Bennorth defeated the Viking tandem of Peter Mohr and Kyle Nodarse, 8-6.

In singles, Sweeney picked up his team-leading ninth win of the season, downing Ryan Dunn 6-0, 6-4 in No. 1 action. Boguslawski netted the 6-2, 6-1 victory in No. 2 singles while Josh Clay and Ben Youel eached recorded wins, playing at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions.

The Cardinals finished their spring break trip with a 4-3 mark, recording victories over Endicott College (Mass.), Knox College (Ill.), Hamline University (Minn.) and Lawrence.

North Central (6-5) returns to the courts on Thursday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m., facing local rival Aurora University at the North High School courts in Naperville, Ill.
