DUBUQUE, Iowa (Apr. 25, 2009)-- The North Central College men's tennis squad rebounded from Thursday's loss with a pair of 5-4 victories on Saturday against Wartburg College (Iowa) and the University of Dubuque.
Against Wartburg (13-11), North Central found themselves in an early hole after getting swept in doubles action.
Sam Sweeney and
Matt Boguslawski suffered just their fourth loss of the season, losing a tightly contested match by a score of 8-6 to Mitch Eslick and Tom Koehen at the No. 1 spot.
In singles, the Cardinals took five of six including a pivitol three hour marathon win by
Nick Defalco at the No. 5 position. Defalco dropped the opening set, 6-3, to Chris Gustas before rallying to the 7-5 win to push the tiebreaker, where he pulled out the 10-4 decision for his third straight victory. Sweeney breezed to the 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 while in No. 2 action, Boguslawski picked up the 6-2, 7-6 victory.
Josh Clay was nearly flawless in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 while at No. 6,
Andrew McKinley needed three sets to retire Walker Wilson, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.
Against Dubuque (13-13), the Cardinals once again found themselves behind after doubles play, dropping two of three before rallying for the win to close out the afternoon. Sweeney and Boguslawski rebounded from their loss earlier in the day with a convincing 8-3 win over Claudio Giraldi and Cory McCarthy in No. 1 doubles.
In singles,
Eric McKee came through in the clutch, earning the win in the deciding match by knocking off David Jacobson 6-4, 6-2 in No. 4 action. At No.1, Sweeney downed Giraldi for his 10th straight singles victory, improving to 18-2 on the year. Boguslawski netted the 6-2, 6-2 win playing at the No. 2 spot while in No. 3 action, Clay cruised to the 6-0, 6-1 victory.
The Cardinals (13-7) close out the regular season on Tuesday, squaring off against Wheaton College at Ranchview Park in Naperville, Ill. Doubles action is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
