KENOSHA, Wis. (May 1, 2009)-- The North Central College men's tennis squad finished fifth at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships on Friday, dropping its opening round match 6-2 against Augustana College before rebounding with the 6-3 win over Elmhurst College in the nightcap.
Against Augustana, the Vikings (20-13) swept all three doubles matches, picking up tiebreaker wins at both No. 1 and No. 3. Chris Mullin and Adam DeSimone edged
Sam Sweeney and
Matt Boguslawski, 9-8 (7-3) in No. 1 action while at No. 3,
Josh Clay and
Eric McKee found themselves on the wrong end of a 9-8 (7-4) decision.
In singles, Sweeney breezed to the 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mullin at No. 1 while at the No. 2 position, Boguslawski took down Greg Ruth, 6-2, 6-0. McKee's match against DeSimone at No. 3 was left unfinished after the Vikings already netted the necissary wins to advance to the Semi-Finals.
In the fifth place match against Elmhurst (6-17), North Central showed its strength at the top of the line-up, winning in No.1 and No. 2 doubles and No. 1 through No. 4 singles.
Sweeney and Boguslawski earned the 8-3 win over the Bluejay tandem of Dave Douglass and Jarrod Keck in No. 1 doubles while in No. 2 action,
Ben Youel and
Gabe Youel snuck by Dave Devaney and Justin Guenther, 8-6.
In singles, Sweeney remained unbeaten against CCIW opponents, defeating Douglass, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 for his 13th straight win. At No. 2, Boguslawski won his fifth straight, turning in a nearly flawless performance, defeating Devaney 6-1, 6-0. Clay was credited with the win at No. 3 after his opponent retired while at No. 4; McKee downed Rob Korsch, 6-1, 6-1.
North Central finishes the season with a 14-9 dual match record, a dramatic improvement over last season's 2-7 mark.
