Cardinals earn doubleheader split

Sep. 5, 2009-- The North Central College women's tennis squad split a pair of matches on Saturday, falling 5-4 to Illinois Wesleyan University in the morning before closing out the day with a 5-2 win over the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) at Ranchview Park. Jessica Ignarski finished the day unbeaten, racking up a pair of singles wins and a win in doubles competition.

In the morning match against College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival Illinois Wesleyan, the Titans showed their strength at the top of the line-up, winning the No. 1 through No. 3 singles matches and the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Allison Paschold rallied from a first set defeat to pull out the, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Cate Hunter in the No. 4 singles match. Abigail Conover made her Cardinal debut with a, 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 5 singles while Ignarski was victorious, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.

Ignarski and Conover accounted for the team's lone doubles win, posting an 8-2 victory over Alissa Goetz and Sarah Wilson at the No. 3 position.

In the late match against St. Francis, the Cardinals claimed four of six singles matches and the lone doubles match completed before the dual was suspended due to darkness.

Paschold won her second singles match of the day, once again rallying from a first set defeat, knocking off Danielle Emola, 1-6, 6-1, 10-4 in No. 2 action. Elizabeth Micheletti breezed by Corinne Lutz, 6-1, 6-2 in No. 3 singles while Ignarski easily won, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 5 action. At No. 6 singles, Christina Madrigal needed the tiebreaker to win both sets by indentical 7-6 (7-4) scores.

In doubles, Micheletti and Paschold defeated Carla Braun and Emily Zajda, 8-4, at the No. 2 position in the only doubles match completed before darkness set in.

North Central (2-1, 0-1 CCIW) returns to the courts on Tuesday, September 8, traveling to River Forest, Ill. for a showdown with the Stars of Dominican University. Matches are slated to begin at 3 p.m. for the non-conference contest.
