AURORA, Ill. (Feb. 26, 2010)-- The North Central College women's tennis team opened up its spring schedule at the indoor courts of the Vaughan Tennis Club on Friday night, falling 8-1 to regionally ranked Calvin College (Mich.) in a non-conference dual match.
Calvin, ranked 13th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, opened up the dual by sweeping the doubles competition. The Cardinals No. 1 squad of
Cory Schillerstrom and
Alicia DeGrado kept it close before ultimately succumbing to Melissa Oosterhouse and Kaitlin Spoehof, 8-4.
In singles,
Abigail Conover notched the lone Cardinal victory, taking down Michelle Busscher 6-1, 7-5 in No. 5 action. Schillerstrom suffered a 6-3, 6-3 defeat at the hands of Oosterhouse at No. 1 while Elizabeth Michelletti was on the wrong end of a 6-3, 6-4 decision in No. 3 singles.
The Knights, who have been competing since January, improved to 2-0 on the season while the Cardinals fall to 11-4 overall and 0-1 in spring play. North Central returns to the courts on Sunday, Feb. 28, squaring off against Saint Mary's College (Ind.) in a non-conference dual inside the brand new Res-Rec Center.
