Apr. 29, 2011--
Unable to find its stride at the plate, the North Central College softball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Friday afternoon, falling 1-0 and 2-0 to Carthage College in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader at Shanower Field.

The Lady Reds' (19-13, 9-3 CCIW) Jen Precht plated the lone run in the opener, belting a one out triple in the top of the third inning, eventually scoring on a Cardinal fielding miscue. The run proved to be the game-winner as the Cardinals (19-11, 5-5 CCIW) loaded the bases on two separate occasions, including the bottom of the seventh with one out, but was unable to generate any runs.

Alyssa Rabulinski was the lone Cardinal with multiple hits, ending the game two-for-two at the plate.

Vlasta Mangia (7-5) suffered the loss, tossing all seven innings and yielding just three hits while striking out five. Krystina Leazer (16-5) earned the complete game shutout victory, striking out seven and allowing eight hits.

An unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning broke open a scoreless game two for the Lady Reds with a Katie Paulmeyer sacrifice fly scoring Alyse Mikolas, who reached on a single to center field.

Carthage added an insurance run in the sixth with a Mikolas double to left center field scoring Alyssa Schrader, who reached base on a fielding error.

Brianna Nelson (10-4) was saddled with the defeat, striking out two and allowing just five hits while Leazer collected her second complete game shutout of the day, allowing just three hits in seven innings of work.

The Cardinals return to the diamond on Saturday, hosting CCIW-rival Augustana College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
