BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (May 6, 2011)-- Edged 5-4 in the opening round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament at the hands of Elmhurst College, the North Central College men's tennis squad rebounded with a decisive 6-0 victory over host Illinois Wesleyan University to place fifth on Friday at the Evergreen Tennis Club.
Against Elmhurst, the Cardinals (10-11) fell into an early hole, dropping two of three doubles matches.
Matt Boguslawski and
Sam Sweeney tallied the lone victory for North Central, blanking Will Jung and Vincent McPherson by an 8-0 count at No. 1.
In singles, Sweeney blew past Alex Harbert, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 while
Boris Kampel prevailed, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 action.
Josh Clay accounted for the Cardinals' third singles victory, downing Justin Guenther, 6-2, 6-3.
Matt Boguslawski pushed his match at No. 2 singles to three sets before ultimately falling, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9) to Jung.
Against the Titans, North Central swept all three doubles matches in route to the shutout victory.
Sweeney and Boguslawski tallied their second win of the day, downing regionally-ranked Brian Piotrowski and Brian Sorich, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Eric McKee and
Josh Clay prevailed at No. 3 with an 8-1 victory.
In singles, Sweeney netted the, 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 1 over Piotrowski while
Josh Clay blanked Aaron Guenther, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
Eric McKee captured the third singles victory, winning by default at No. 4.
