CCIW Release

Feb. 14, 2012-- For the second time this season, North Central College's John Wood has been named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Field Athlete of the Week.

Wood earns the award after winning the pole vault at Saturday's Chicagoland Indoor Championships held at the Al B. Carius Track. The senior soared over a personal best 17 feet, 1 3/4 inches, edging teammate Josh Winder for the top spot by virtue of less missed attempts.

Wood's clearance is the second best vault in NCAA Division III this season as Wood and Winder are the only two individuals to clear 17 feet during the 2012 indoor season.

This is the second CCIW Field Athlete of the Week honor for Wood, also capturing the accolade on Jan. 17 and is the seventh overall for the Cardinal track & field program. Winder (Jan. 31) and Zach Heerspink (Jan. 24) previously earned Field Athlete honors while Dan Benton (Feb. 7), the 4x400-meter relay (Jan. 31) and Tim Hird (Jan. 17) have all captured Track Athlete of the Week honors during the 2012 indoor season.

The top-ranked Cardinals won the 19-team Chicagoland Championships, tallying 195 points with CCIW rival Carthage College placing a distant second with 69 points.

North Central returns to the track on Friday, hosting the Cardinal Classic at the Al B. Carius Track. Action is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
