CHICAGO, Ill. (Apr. 24, 2012)-- The North Central College softball team tallied its second doubleheader sweep in as many days on Tuesday at the Holmgren Complex, taking down host and College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival North Park University, 6-0 and 5-4.
Vlasta Mangia tallied a one-hitter in the game one shutout while the Cardinals (18-16, 4-8 CCIW) utilized a five run rally in the bottom of the seventh to escape with the series sweep.
North Central opened up a scoreless affair in the top of the fourth inning, pushing across a pair of runs. Mangia led off the frame by reaching base on an error before scoring on a
Jordyn Beck fielder's choice. The Cardinals doubled their advantage with pinch runner
Jordan Johnson scoring on a Viking error, their second miscue of the inning.
The visiting Cardinals piled on four more runs in the fifth to solidify the victory. Mangia and
Mary Caron crossed the plate on a North Park error while an
Ashley Larak double to center field drove in two more, giving North Central the 6-0 edge.
Carly Trenhaile finished two-for-four to lead the Cardinals offensively.
Mangia (13-12) earned her second complete game shutout in as many days, yielding just one hit in seven innings of work while Courtney Lucht suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs and issuing six walks.
The Vikings (20-18, 3-11 CCIW) struck first in game two, piling on three runs in the fifth inning. Ana Pistilli singled in a run before a Katie Anderson triple tallied two more, giving the home side the 3-0 lead.
Another Pistilli RBI single gave the Vikings a comfortable 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh before the Cardinals offense came alive, pounding out six hits and scoring five runs for the win.
Colleen Drennan led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle, later scoring on a wild pitch. A
Sarah Porter single plated a pair of runs, scoring
Ashley Guest and Larak before a Caron single up the middle scored pinch runner Johnson to tie the contest at four apiece. Up next was Mangia, who belted a single to left field, scoring Ryan for the walk off victory.
Caron finished three-for-four at the plate in game two to lead the Cardinals while Porter and Guest each tallied two hits.
Mangia again went the distance in the circle, striking out two in the complete game victory. Casey Latal suffered the loss, striking out six and yielding five earned runs.
The Cardinals, winners of four straight, put their streak on the line on Thursday, taking on non-conference foe Lake Forest College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
