Feb. 5, 2013 - North Central College men's track and field athlete John Crain has been selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Track Athlete of the Week. The CCIW announced this week's selections on Tuesday.

Crain was selected on the strength of his performance in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Squig Converse Invitational on Friday. He won the 5,000-meter run in 14 minutes, 24.22 seconds, establishing an indoor personal best and recording the second-fastest time nationwide among NCAA Division III athletes thus far this season.

Crain was a Division III Indoor All-American last season in the distance medley relay and qualified for the Division III Outdoor Championships in the 5,000 in May. He placed sixth at the NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championships in November, earning All-America honors and leading North Central to a national title.

The selection gives North Central three CCIW Athlete of the Week Awards this indoor season. Pole vaulter Peter Geraghty has been named the conference's Field Athlete of the Week twice.

The third-ranked Cardinals host the Chicagoland Indoor Championships on Saturday at Al B. Carius Track. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
