FORT MYERS, Fla. (Mar. 16, 2013) – The North Central College softball team opened up its 2013 season winning the first four games of its annual spring break trip, this season taking part in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
On Friday the Cardinals opened with a 9-0 victory over Curry College (Ma.) as
Vlasta Mangia threw a no-hitter and drove in three runs.
Mangia got North Central on the board driving an RBI double to left before scoring later in the inning to give the Cardinals a 2-0 first inning lead.
The Cardinal bats kept rolling in the top of the second as
Kayla Antle and Mangia each singled home a run to put North Central on top 4-0.
An
Amanda Walker 2-run homerun in the top of the fifth put the game out of reach as the Cardinals went on to win 9-0.
Mangia did not allow a hit over six innings while striking out nine and walking two batters.
In the Cardinals second game on Friday, the offense scored eight runs over the first three innings en route to a 10-2 victory over Nazareth College, including a five run second powered by a 2-RBI triple by
Taylor Ryan and RBI singles by Mangia, Walker and Antle.
North Central would add two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively while
Andrea Starr earned her first collegiate victory on the mound giving up two earned runs over five innings pitched.
On Saturday, the Cardinals (4-0) struck first against Ohio Wesleyan University as
Amanda Walker singled home
Taylor Ryan and that was all the scoring North Central needed.
Andrea Starr threw a gem in her second start in as many days on the mound, throwing seven shutout innings while striking out a pair.
The Cardinals were also victorious in its final game on Saturday, downing The College of Wooster, 5-1.
North Central is back in action Monday, Mar. 17, taking on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 9 a.m. (ET) followed by The College at Brockport at 11 a.m. (ET) in Fort Myers.
