(Mar. 26, 2012) – The North Central college softball team extended their winning streak to 12 games to open the 2013 season, after hammering Concordia University Chicago 10-1 and 12-0 in the team's home opener on a frigid Tuesday afternoon.
After three scoreless innings,
Kiersten Tinkoff hit a two-out double and
Andrea Starr blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence to give the Cardinals (12-0) a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars (3-9) responded with a run in the bottom fourth, but North Central blew the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring eight runs on six hits.
Kayla Antle hit a two-run double, Tinkoff contributed an RBI single, and Carly Trenhail blasted an RBI-triple to center field to power the inning.
Vlasta Mangia (6-0) put down Concordia in order in the top of the fifth to seal the victory. Mangia tossed six innings and gave up just three hits and one earned run.
In game two, the Cardinals scored in every single inning, while Starr continued to baffle opposing hitters in the shutout. Starr gave up just one hit, a leadoff single to Olivia Hires, before cruising through the Cougar lineup.
North Central's offense again used the big inning to put the game out of reach. Heading into the bottom of the fourth, North Central held a 5-0 lead, but the Cardinals rattled the bats and scored seven runs on five hits and took advantage of four Cougar miscues.
Cecie Portillo started the inning with a triple and Mangia,
Amanda Walker,
Jordyn Beck all had RBI singles in the inning.
Tinkoff had four hits, three doubles, and four RBIs, while Portillo added a triple, three hits and two RBI on the day to lead the North Central attack.
The Cardinals are at home again on Thursday when they host Beloit College at 3:00 p.m.
