Game 1 Box Score
(Apr. 13, 2013) – With the score tied, two outs, and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh,
Vlasta Mangia coaxed a walk to record the game-winning RBI and give the North Central College softball team a 3-2 victory over the University of Chicago. The Cardinals also won the nightcap, 4-1.
North Central (25-1) trailed, 2-1 heading into the bottom of sixth, but the Cardinals used a two-out rally to tie the score.
Amanda Walker doubled off the left field wall and
Kiersten Tinkoff blasted a single to left to drive her in.
In the critical seventh, the Cardinals had
Cecie Portillo and
Olivia Goethals at second and third with just one down.
Jordan Johnson then hit a groundball to second and Tabbetha Bohac tossed the ball home to cut off Portillo who was retired after a short run down.
Kayla Antle then walked and Vangia followed another walk to win the game.
Walker had two hits in the first game, while Mangia drove in two of the Cardinals' three runs. Mangia (16-0) went the distance in the circle as well, scattering seven hits and allowing just two runs.
In the second game,
Jordyn Beck, normally the Cardinal catcher, got the nod in the circle, and tossed three innings and gave up just one run and one hit. Mangia relieved her in the fourth and went the rest of the day.
North Central provided Beck with some early run support by putting up two in the first and another in the second. Mangia and
Carly Trenhaile had RBI hits in the first, and
Tara Sears, who was pinch running for Beck, trotted home on a wild pitch in the second. North Central added its final run of the day in the fifth on a single by
Kiersten Tinkoff.
Because Beck didn't go the required four innings, Mangia was credited with the victory. Trenhaile led the offense in game two, with two hits and an RBI.
North Central gets back to conference play on Tuesday when they host Carthage College at 3:00 p.m.
