FOREST PARK, Ill. (Apr. 2, 2013) – The North Central College pitching staff allowed just three hits, while the offense collected 21 in its domination of Dominican University. The Cardinals swept the non-conference doubleheader 8-0 and 15-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
North Central (18-0) got on the board in top of the first inning on a RBI groundout by
Amanda Walker, but the offense was held in check in game one, and led just 1-0 heading into the top of the fifth.
Vlasta Mangia drove in
Olivia Goethals and
Kayla Antle on a single to right field, and
Andrea Starr knocked her in with a single up the middle to give the Cardinals a 4-0 cushion.
The Cardinals took advantage of some Star errors in the sixth to tack on two more runs and Starr removed all doubt with two-run homer to left field in the seventh.
Mangia (9-0), the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Pitcher of the Week, didn't disappoint. She struck out five, walked one, and surrendered just two hits in her complete game shutout.
In game two, the Cardinals pounced on Dominican starter, Sarah Slouber, and tagged her for 10 runs in just 2/3 of an inning. Mangia got the visitors on the board with a two-run shot to left, her fourth of the season.
Carly Trenhaile,
Cecie Portillo,
Amanda Walker,
Taylor Ryan, and Starr also added RBI hits in the inning.
Portillo continued her hot hitting in the second with a two-run home run to center field. She added her fourth RBI of game two on a base hit in the third and
Tara Sears drove in her first RBI of the season.
Jordan Johnson completed the scoring in the fifth with a base hit to center field.
Starr (9-0) threw another gem for the Cardinals, yielding just one hit in five innings pitched. Mangia had four hits on the afternoon and drove in four runs, while Portillo and Starr both had three hits. Goethals also had three hits and scored three times.
