WHEATON, Ill. (Apr. 22, 2013) – Vlasta Mangia threw her eighth shutout of the season in the first game at Ruth Leedy Field on Monday afternoon, but Wheaton College scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning of the nightcap to earn a split with the North Central College softball team.
Mangia (19-3) was dominate for nearly the entire afternoon, and after tossing a complete game shutout in game one, she held the Thunder scoreless for the first seven innings of the second game of the twin bill.  With the score tied at zero, the squads headed to extra innings, and Wheaton finally broke through with five runs on five hits in the top half of the eighth.
The Cardinals (28-4, 6-4) rallied in the bottom of the inning, but it was cut short before they could tie the game.
Kayla Antle, Mangia, and
Amanda Walker hit three straight singles to start the inning and cut the lead to 5-1.  After
Kiersten Tinkoff flew out,
Carly Trenhaile singled, and
Cecie Portillo reached on an error to make the score 5-2, with the bases loaded for
Ashley Guest.  Guest laid down a sac bunt to score Walker, while Trenhaile and Portillo advanced to second and third.  Representing the winning run,
Olivia Goethals walked, but
Taylor Ryan struck out to end the Cardinal rally.
In the opener, North Central got on the board early with a RBI single by Tinkoff in the top of the first.  With Mangia cruising on the mound, the Cardinals added some insurance in the seventh inning on a single up the gut by Antle that scored Guest.
Mangia had seven strikeouts and gave up just four hits.  With the victory, Mangia moved into a tie for second place on the all-time wins list with 47 for her career.  She needs just one more to tie the all-time record.
Tinkoff and Antle led the way for the offense on Monday with three hits and an RBI apiece.  Mangia saw her 14-game snapped after going hitless in the opener.
The Cardinals are back on the diamond tomorrow when they host North Park University for a CCIW doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
