(Apr. 25, 2013) – Vlasta Mangia recorded her 48th career victory to tie Chris Johnson's all-time record and the North Central College softball team improved to 24-0 in non-conference play with 2-1 and 8-3 victories over Lake Forest College on Thursday evening.

With the opening game victory, Mangia (20-3) also broke a tie at third place for single season victories.  The Foresters (15-14) managed just one unearned run off of Mangia in the first inning, before being silenced for the final six.

Jessi Werner (8-6) kept the Cardinal lineup off the scoreboard until the fifth inning.  Ashley Guest led off with a bloop single, and when Olivia Goethals tired to bunt her over, the Foresters threw the ball away and the Cardinals had runners on second and third.  After Werner retired Taylor Ryan and Kayla Antle, Mangia crushed a triple to right field and gave herself all the run support she needed.

In the nightcap, Andrea Starr, making her first start in three weeks, picked up the victory after tossing the first four innings.  The Foresters put up three in the second off of Starr, but North Central responded with eight runs over the next three frames.

North Central scored an unearned run in the second before exploding for four in the third and three more in the fourth.  Kiersten Tinkoff roped an RBI single and Carly Trenhaile followed by blasting a two-run double down the left field line.  Cecie Portillo knocked her in with a double of her own to finish the third.

In the fourth, Tinkoff knocked in her second run of the day, and Amanda Walker drove in a run to give the Cardinals a commanding 8-3 lead.

After Starr gave up a leadoff single in the fifth, she was relieved by Mangia, who tossed three more scoreless innings to get her second save of the season.

North Central hosts Augustana College on Saturday at Shanower Family Field at 1:00 p.m.
