(Apr. 29, 2013) – The North Central College softball team fell 3-2 and 6-1 to North Park University in its College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin regular season finale on Monday.
In the opener,
Vlasta Mangia (21-4) and Casey Latal (11-6) held the offenses scoreless early, but the Vikings (24-12, 6-8) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning by taking advantage of one of seven Cardinal errors on the afternoon.
North Central (31-7, 7-7) answered with a run on a single by
Taylor Ryan that scored
Amanda Walker, who singled earlier in the inning.
The Vikings struck again in the sixth with another unearned run to give them a 3-1 lead. The Cardinals worked a little two out magic in the bottom of the inning to inch closer to the visitors. With two outs,
Carly Trenhaile reached on an error, and Mangia followed with a bunt single. Ryan knocked in Trenhaile, and the Cardinals had the winning run on.
Ashley Guest reached on another error by the Viking defense to load the bases, but Latal got
Olivia Goethals to groundout to end the threat.
In the Cardinals final at-bat,
Cecie Portillo roped a one-out single up the middle, but was stranded.
Once again, the pitchers dominated early in the nightcap. Not until the fourth inning did the Vikings score the first run of the game off of
Andrea Starr (10-3) with three runs on three hits, and took advantage of two Cardinal miscues.
North Central closed the gap to 3-1 in the top of the fifth on starter Danielle Warner (11-5). Portillo drilled a triple to right field and
Kiersten Tinkoff lifted a ball to left field to score her. The Cardinals had runners at the corners with nobody out, but Latal, who relieved Warner, got Trenhaile to hit a groundball on the infield and the Vikings threw home to nail
Tara Sears at the plate. Latal then got
Jordyn Beck and Ryan out in succession.
Sonya Le blew the game open in the sixth with a bases loaded double to right center field to give the visitors a commanding 6-1 lead.
North Central is back on the diamond tomorrow when they host Aurora University at 3:00 p.m.
