(Apr. 6, 2013) – The North Central College softball team rode a stellar pitching performance by junior Vlasta Mangia to beat Carroll University 7-2 and 9-0 in a non-conference doubleheader on a cloudy afternoon at Shanower Family Field.

Mangia (12-0) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the opening game, before having it broken up by a Hannah Sanidas home run.  It was the only earned run Mangia would allow all afternoon.  With Andrea Starr out of the lineup, Mangia pitched the second game of the twin bill and tossed a complete game three-hit shutout.

Carroll (4-14) scored an unearned run in the top of the first in game one, but North Central (21-1) came right back when Kayla Antle took advantage of a Pioneer error and knotted the score at one.  Antle doubled in the third and Mangia knocked her in with a single to give the Cardinals a slim 2-1 lead.

North Central blew the game wide open in the fifth, scoring five runs on just two hits.  Antle again played a critical role with a triple to right that plated Olivia Goethals and Jordan Johnson.   Mangia followed by reaching on an error that scored and Antle.  Amanda Walker put the exclamation mark on the inning with a two-run homer over the center field fence.

Taylor Steinhilber (2-4) took the loss for the Pioneers after allowing seven runs in five innings pitched.

After being held scoreless in the first inning of game two, North Central came back to score nine runs in its next three times at-bat.

Goethals and Taylor Ryan both had RBI singles in the second inning and Antle hit another double to drive in Ryan and give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.

North Central produced its second five-run inning of the afternoon in the third, powered by RBI base hits by Cecie Portillo and Mangia and a two-run double by Jordyn Beck.  Johnson's pinch hit double in the fourth knocked in Ashley Guest, who doubled, to end the scoring for the afternoon.

The Cardinals jump back into College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play on Tuesday when they travel to Elmhurst College at 3:00 p.m.
