Women's Tennis Opens Season with Conference Split

The North Central women's tennis team opened up the 2013 season with a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) double header split, falling to Carthage College, 5-4 in the opener before cruising past Millikin University in the nightcap 9-0.
 
In the opener, the Cardinals' Katie Drone was edged at the No. 1 position by Carthage's Bari Reynolds, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 and Miranda Grizaffi could not get past Haleigh McPeek, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 2.  At the No. 3 position, Kelsey Forkin earned a 6-3, 6-3, straight set victory over Abbi Howell, while Madeline Urban was victorious at the No. 4 spot by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.  Rebecca Ross was also victorious for the Cardinals (1-1, 1-1 CCIW), downing Holly Weber, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
 
The Lady Reds (3-1, 2-1 CCIW) claimed two of three doubles matches to take a decisive 5-4 advantage.
 
Against Millikin, Drone led off with a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8) win over Paige Bequette and Grizaffi earned her first collegiate win over Amber Morgan, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2.  Forkin, Urban, Ross and Reynolds Cross all earned straight set 6-0, 6-0, wins over the Big Blue (0-5, 0-4 CCIW) at positions three through six, respectively.
 
In doubles play, the Cardinals duo of Drone and Forkin defeated Bequette and Amber Morgan, 8-3, while Urban and Cross shutout Paige Ehrat and Erica Cornelius, 8-0, and Kassandra Bernardo and Rebecca Ross eased past MacKenzie Case and Ryan Morgan, 8-0.
 
North Central is back in action tomorrow, hosting Aurora University in a non-conference matchup at the NCC Tennis Courts.  Matches are slated to begin at 9 am.
