Feb. 22, 2014 – The North Central College men's tennis team cruised to a pair of non-conference victories Saturday afternoon at the Res/Rec Center, downing Webster University, 8-1 in the opener before sweeping Dominican University, 9-0 to close the day.
In the opening match against Webster (0-1), the Cardinals earned 5 of 6 singles matches as
Rustam Saini earned a hard fought victory over Travis Blair, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 at the No. 1 position, while
Oliver Moews fought back from one set down to defeat Karl Wesshaupt, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 at No. 3.
Mason Sass followed with a decisive 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4, while
Connor Sass cruised in straight 6-0 sets over Carlton Poindexter at No. 5 and
Aleksandar Vasic downed Beau Kolba at No. 6, 7-6, 6-4.
In doubles play, the combination of Saini and
Josh Rodig defeated Blair and Wesshaupt, 8-6 at No. 1, followed by victories from the Sass brothers at No. 3 and the duo of Vasic and
Jesse Adamson shut out Kolba and Skyler Adams, 8-0.
In the nightcap against Dominican, Saini and Rodig each won by identical 8-4 scores at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. At No.3, Moews once against came back from a set down to defeat Alex Dee, 3-6, 6-1, 10-3 and
Mason Sass followed with a 6-0, 6-0 showing over Chandler Allen at No. 4. At No. 5 and No. 6,
Connor Sass and Vasic were each victorious by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1 scores, respectively.
The Cardinal combination of Rodig and Saini got North Central started in doubles play, toughing out a 9-8 win over Krystian Drozdz and Kevin Amarantos, while the Sass brothers teamed up again to defeat Allen and Dee, 8-2 and Adamson and Vasic improved to 3-0 on the season, cruising to an 8-0 win over Will Foley and Spencer Clark at No. 3.
North Central is back in action Friday, Feb. 28, traveling to Lake Forest College. Matches are slated to begin at the Racquet Club of Lake Bluff at 8 pm.
