CHICAGO, Ill. (Mar. 31, 2014) – The North Central College softball team extended their winning streak to nine on Monday as they defeated Concordia University of Chicago 3-0 and 10-2 in a nonconference double header.
In the first game of the day, the Cardinals (12-2) shut out the Cougars (4-10) with pitcher
Vlasta Mangia holding them to only one hit. Mangia secured four strikeouts during her seven innings pitched.
Unlike Concordia, North Central tallied up 10 hits throughout the game. All three runs came in the second inning thanks to doubles from
Bri Floyd and
Cecie Portillo. Floyd brought in
Jordyn Beck and
Jordan Johnson while Portillo hit in Floyd.
At the bottom of the seventh is where the Cougars achieved their only hit of the night with a single to right field before the Cardinals put an end to it with two groundouts and one strikeout. Â
The bats became more alive for North Central in the second game of the day. Beck started the fifth inning with a home run to push their lead up by three. The offense didn't slow down as
Kayla Antle responded with a double to center field, scoring in Floyd who had been walked.
Andrea Starr and Mangia added singles to the inning each gaining an RBI while
Amanda Cooper stole home.
Starter Starr pitched for six innings, allowing only five hits and achieving five strikeouts. The Cougars put on their only two runs in the fifth inning with a single to center field that scored two.
North Central didn't let up in the seventh as they tacked on their final two runs with RBIs from Johnson and Beck.
Bri Kiel closed the game for North Central holding Concordia.
The Cardinals have their home opener tomorrow in a double header against nonconference Beloit College. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. at Shanower Family Field.
