(April 12, 2014) – The North Central College softball team broke their six-game winning streak when they fell 2-1 against the University of Chicago Maroons in game one of the double header, but came back to win game two, 7-3, on Saturday.
The 18
th ranked Cardinals (22-4, CCIW 5-1) were scoreless amongst the Maroons (16-2) until the bottom of the fifth inning when Chicago put a run on the board first. It started with a single down the left field line to begin the inning, followed by a throwing error by pitcher
Vlasta Mangia to advance the runner. With a single to shortstop, Chicago was able to cross home plate with an unearned run.
At the top of the seventh,
Amanda Walker snatched her fourth home run of the season with a shot deep into left center field. This tied the game for North Central. The women weren't able to get ahead, but held Chicago in the bottom of the seventh as they went into extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, it took one strong hit in left center field for the Maroons as they snagged their own home run, winning the game 2-1.
In game two, North Central had to battle from a 3-0 deficit going into the fourth inning.
Brooke Kehoe started the Cardinal rally with a home run to left field to get them on the board. Mangia followed up with a single to left field with
Andrea Starr scoring her in off a double making it 3-2.
The Cardinals kept the bats going in the top of the fifth when
Cecie Portillo singled and was able to score off a doubled to right center field from
Kiersten Tinkoff. Walker also got an RBI when she hit a sacrifice fly to right field that got in
Kayla Antle who had been walked.
North Central gained another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth with a home run from Mangia to center field and a walked in run from Tinkoff to bring in
Jenna Amazzalorso. The women added the final run in the seventh with an RBI from Amazzalorso who got in Mangia, winning 7-3.
The Cardinals take on Carthage College for another College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matchup on Tuesday in Kenosha, Wis. with game time slated for 3 p.m.
