KENOSHA, Wis. (April 16, 2014) – The North Central College softball team took on the Carthage College Lady Reds in a conference double header on Wednesday. North Central lost the first game 2-0, but won the second 6-5.

The Cardinals (23-5, CCIW 6-2) were not able to get the bats alive in game one, only collecting two hits. The Lady Reds (13-9, CCIW 4-4) put themselves on the board in the first inning with a double to left center field that was able to be knocked in for an RBI with a single.

Starter Andrea Starr held the Lady Reds for the next three innings collecting two strikeouts, but it wasn't enough as North Central never answered offensively and struggled to find the gaps.

Carthage scored their second and final run of the game in the fifth inning with another double and single winning, 2-0.

In game two, the bats were more active for North Central as they tallied two runs in the second inning, putting them ahead. It started with Amanda Walker reaching on base from an error and a double from Carly Trenhaile that advanced her to third base. Then a double down the right field line by Vlasta Mangia gave her two RBI to put the Cardinals in front 2-1.

Carthage didn't let up on North Central as they responded with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning. The Cardinals had to work their way back up and were able to in the fourth.

Trenhaile homered to left center field to kick off the inning followed by singles from Brooke Kehoe and Mangia. Cecie Portillo added her own home run to the board and collected three RBI while scoring in pinch runner Amanda Cooper and Mangia.

Starter Bri Kiel would get the win for the Cardinals as closer Mangia held the Lady Reds for the remainder of the game, only allowing one run in the fifth inning with a final 6-5.

North Central is at home on Thursday for a double header against conference foe Wheaton College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Shanower Family Field.
